There are A LOT of brands and styles of surf wax out there, all waiting for you to buy, apply and rant and rave about how it’s the best surf wax. But… the question begs an answer… Is there a best surf wax? If so, what makes it so special?

Is there a best surf wax?

Now I have a personal opinion that surf wax is surf wax is surf wax, to a point. They all have their differences, but for the most part, they all use the same basic composition. Now don’t mistake that comment as me saying that cold water wax will work the same as warm water or tropical surf wax. That’s not accurate. I was just stating the base composition of the materials used in surf wax. Without further adieu, let’s get into the wax!

1.) Sticky Bumps Surf Wax

Sticky Bumps Warm/Tropical Water Surfboard Wax, White, 6 Pack

If you’ve been surfing for a while, you have heard about Sticky Bumps Surf Wax. Heck, even if you’ve never surfed but been in a surf shop, you’ve probably seen Sticky Bumps at least. Sticky Bumps is one of the original manufacturers of commercial surf wax, founded in 1971. They have had quite some time to perfect their recipe for keeping you on your board. They sell many different styles of surf wax, including:

  • Cold Water // Temperature Rating | Cold –  For water temps 60°F / 15°C and below
  • Cool Water // Temperature Rating | Cool –  For water temps 58°F – 68°F / 14°C – 19°C
  • Original // Temperature Rating | Trop –  For water temps 75°F / 28°C and above
  • Warm Water // Temperature Rating | Warm –  For water temps 64°F – 74°F / 19°C – 28°C
  • Hawaiian // Temperature Rating | HI Trop – For water temps 80°F / 26°C and above.

They have also come out with the Tour series, Munkey, and Punt. Mostly, I just stick to the standard original releases, as they work just fine for me.

Sticky Bumps honestly has my favorite scent as well. Blueberry. It’s not too strong, but strong enough to smell it’s blueberry goodness. I put Sticky Bumps as the number 1 on this list because it’s what I use. I use the Original warm/trop down in Melbourne, Florida. I love it. But keep in mind, this list isn’t listed in a way that determines which is better than the other.

When you use this surf wax, make sure you use a base coat, like Sticky Bumps base coat. You will get better performance and more satisfaction out of the wax. As with any surf wax, don’t leave your board in the sun where it will bake, because the wax will melt off and your awesome wax application will be useless. They are the best surf wax, right?¿ Let’s move on shall we?

2.) Mr. Zogs Sex Wax

Mr. Zogs Original Sexwax – Warm Water Temperature Coconut Scented (White)

Here’s a famous one for you. Mr. Zogs Sex Wax. You more than likely have heard of or used this one before too. Lot’s of people swear by this wax, and won’t use any other. It’s another VERY popular choice, and they offer all the water temps as well, to make sure that wherever you are surfing, you will stay on your board.

Just like Sticky Bumps, Mr. Zogs has had many years to perfect their formula, as they went commercial in 1972. This is good news, as you know you will get a stellar product for your money. Here’s a list of their product line:

  • Quick Humps Eco-Box
  • Quick Humps Regular
  • Dream Cream Top Coats
  • Original
  • Really Tacky

Here’s a quote straight from Mr. Zogs about their wax:

Sexwax Quick Humps and Dream Cream surfboard wax formulas are the “go to” choice for professional and experienced surfers around the world. Original Sex Wax and Really Tacky are our older “RETRO” formulations that are still available for those seeking Classic surf wax performance..

You can’t really go wrong with Sex Wax. It’s great stuff… I mean, if it’s good enough for gnarly pro surfers, then it’s probably good enough for the average weekend warrior. For sure! But are they the best surf wax?

3.) Bubble gum

Bubble Gum Original Surf Wax Warm (64¡- 74¡) Single Bar

Third in our lineup, Bubble Gum Surf Wax. Now I’m going to be honest with you, I’ve never personally used Bubble Gum surf wax products. However, I know people who have, and I’ve heard the talk. There are lot’s of people out there who will use no other surf wax. To me, it looks a little more pricey and I get great performance out of my Sticky Bumps so… That being said, I hear that Bubble Gum puts a literal piece of Bubble Gum in with your order, every order. So you not only get some surf wax, but you also get some chewy goodness to go along with it.

The company went commercial in 1984, so while not quite as old as Mr. Zogs and Sticky Bumps, they have still had many years to perfect their offering and formula. As with the previous two, Bubble Gum offers wax for every surfing condition too. Shall we list their product offerings? Yes, yes we shall:

  • Premium
  • Original
  • Rob Machado Organic
  • Pineapple Express
  • Gu Top Coat
  • Custom Label

Scents include coconut and you guessed it, Bubble Gum! That’s a fun way to make your surf wax smell good. Every time you go out and paddle, your nostrils will fill with that 80’s 90’s fun bubble gum goodness. Anyways, nostalgia… Could they be the best surf wax? Let’s continue!

4.) Matuna’s Surf Wax

Matuna’s Surf Wax 6 Pack (Choose Temperature) (Warm)

Here, we give you the original in 100% organic surf wax. Let’s get some bullet points to give you the juicy details:

  • MADE WITH THE EARTH IN MIND: 100% Natural Biodegradable-Nontoxic. Made with Organic ingredients. Matunas organic surf wax is the only non-toxic, biodegradable, petroleum free, no synthetic chemicals, eco-friendly surf wax, made using local ingredients from their farm in California. They strive for environmental quality and ethics in their business by making ecologically friendly surf products that do not have negative effects on our environment. The surf wax is 100% Natural.
  • MADE OF RECYCLED MATERIALS: The package is even made on recycled paper with soy ink. Mother earth says thank you!
  • HIGH QUALITY: This wax is the real deal. It’s easy to apply to any board surface which means less time prepping and more time in the water.

Well, there you have it. If you want organic, REAL organic, then you need to go, right now, and buy Matuna’s surf wax!

Now, as with bubblegum, I’ve never used Matuna’s. I don’t have any friends, family, or enemies that use it either. But… I couldn’t leave a surf wax off the list that makes LOTS of other lists. There must be a reason for that, and if I didn’t include it, I know someone, somewhere, would bash me and be like, “Hey dude, why the f*@K didn’t you include Matuna’s. Are you a kook?¿”. And we don’t want that, right? But if you are looking for ORGANIC surf wax, go grab some bars of Matuna’s. Will they be the best surf wax?

5.) Double Barrel Surf Wax

No affiliate link on this one. That’s cool though! Let’s get right into the salt and sun on this one.

Here we have a surf wax by Santa Barbara Surfing. As you have probably guessed it, I haven’t used this surf wax either! The reason, I love my Sticky Bumps… I’ve always used it, and I know what to expect with it, so… that’s just my wax… That being said, these guys at SBS have made some pretty bold claims. Let’s see what they have to say about their wax, shall we?

Double Barrel Surf Wax, the wax so nice you’ll get barreled… twice.

-SBS

Ok, now that in itself is a pretty cool claim. Right? I mean, the wax will get your barreled twice. I’m almost sold. What else?

This Premium wax will truly provide the best traction for all of your boards. Higher performance than Mr. Zogs Sexwax Quick Humps or Sticky Bumps.

-SBS

Now that’s the boldest claim I’ve ever seen. Take two of the best known, oldest surf wax producers, and basically say that your wax blows them out of the water. Is it just marketing or is it true? Are they the best surf wax?

**If anyone reading this has used SBS Double Barrel Surf Wax and it truly was like sticking your feet in a hot creamy vat of waxy love, let me know. Honestly, email me, tell me about your wax affair, and I will send you a freakin’ Coconut Swell Logo t-shirt… Really… I will! Disclaimer lol… Offer limited to one, maybe two, people. I’m not mailing out 1.2 million t-shirts for free.

Back on topic, those claims really blew my mind.

When a company that’s “newer”, makes those claims, they must have a fire product. I may have to try them out since they are throwing bows at my Sticky Bumps buddies. But if the claim is real, then I may have to splurge a bit and have 2 favorite waxes for my stick. Just go read what the company has to say about their waxes. Link is up in the beginning of this section… Sheesh.

6.) Mrs. Palmers Surf Wax

MRS. PALMERS SURF WAX WARM 3 PACK

Last on our list, is Mrs. Palmers Surf Wax. Now, I have used this surf wax. Twice actually. I will say that I would buy and use this surf wax again, if my small arsenal of Sticky Bumps was all gone and I wanted to surf on something else for a change. I wouldn’t object to it at all.

The last time I used Mrs. Palmers was back in, I wanna say, 2009? I was at Sebastian Inlet, Florida on a Rusty surfboard (I miss that board…). I needed to put a coat of new wax on top as my current top coat was lacking quite a bit, and it was pathetic. As luck would have it, I didn’t have any on me. I was out! I scoured my car, under the seats, the trunk, everywhere. Nothing.

There was a nice fellow surfer (if your reading this and remember that day, thank you again bro) walking down the boardwalk as I was sitting there watching my waves break. Just out of curiosity, I said, “Hey! I hate to ask but do you have any wax I could use man?”. He was like, “Yeah man, come up here and I’ll give you some”.

The surf gods are real. He gave me an unused, pristine bar of Mrs. Palmers. I slapped it on the deck, strangled my leash around my right foot, and pranced gleefully into the ocean! I paddled out, not really that far, and caught a wave eventually. I was surfing. Finally. Mrs. Palmers and that dude saved my sanity that day. Thanks to you both. Would I buy it to use? Sure I would! It’s a great surf wax. But is it the best surf wax?

They were founded in 1988 (the year I was born, so it must have been destiny), and have had many years to perfect their formula. That’s about all there is to say about that. They offer surf wax for all conditions of temperature. That’s pretty standard these days.

Surf Wax Conclusion

I wouldn’t have listed any waxes here that I wouldn’t buy myself. They are all great contenders in the surfing world. If you are new at surfing or just looking for something new to try, I hope I listed some great ideas for you to try out. You can find most if not all of these surf waxes at a local surf shop, online, and if you would be so kind, through one of our affiliate links.

Before I leave this post for now, one more surf wax that wasn’t listed but is just as good, is Famous. Check them out too. They are an excellent contender as well, but I’m going to leave it at my personal top 6 list.

Well, if you are done reading this, and the waves are breaking, get off the computer, or your phone, and get out there and ride a dreamer. You will not create great surfing memories or connect with the ocean indoors. And if you bring things to the beach, pick up your freakin’ garbage! Until next time…
